Island Batik Marvelous Mini Challenge from Sew Preeti Quilts

Island Batik's August Challenge is Marvelous Minis.

The guidelines are simple.

Any technique, any pattern and size between 12" square and 24" square.

With such broad and open ended requirements, my mind went in many different directions...

Improv Piecing because that is my favorite technique

Playing with Scraps

Rainbow theme because I could not pick just one color

Island Batik Rainbow

A Landscape Mini using gradations because they are just so beautiful

Gradations

International Sisters because it made me slightly famous(scroll down)

But I kept coming back to the recent Supreme Court decision leaving us

with fewer freedoms ...

Beauty and the Beast - Vitrine from Sew Preeti Quilts

Once upon a time before the great pandemic, I was at a fancy store admiring beautiful jewelry.  I have plenty of jewelry including some exquisite pieces from India. But the glittering stones beckoned to me.

Jewelry from India - Necklace, Earrings and Bangles

Only if I had all MY jewelry in a catalogue/showcase that I could admire every time temptation struck.

This is how this quilt feels - my pretty and adorable fabrics, including low volume beauties in a transparent display case. Hence I have named it Vitrine, a fancy word for a glass display case :-)

New Finish!!!

I had made ...

Honoring RBG from Sew Preeti Quilts

The date was September 18, 2020. Paul and I were eating dinner while watching TV as we do most evenings. My phone buzzed.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Champion Of Gender Equality, Dies At 87

"Oh no", I exclaimed. "Mitch McConnell will fill her seat."

As the country grappled with grief and shock, the Senate republicans did just that. Swooped in for a power grab in record time, during an election year, while flouting their own precedent as the pandemic ravaged the country. The Supreme Court now tilted firmly conservative with a 6-3 majority.

2020 will forever be the year of ...

Bruised August from Sew Preeti Quilts

August is almost over and I am relieved.  It has been difficult and yet I feel guilty dwelling upon my insignificant issues when the country is aflame, while some of us look away and others fan the flames of unrest.

Fabric Selection

I feel beaten and bruised even when I have no visible scars.
The color for Rainbow Scrap Challenge August 2020 is reminiscent of just that - a bruise.

In progress

Here are my completed Picket Star Quilt Blocks for August 2020.

Java Plum
Paul: Purple?
Me: I call it Plum. Java Plum to be exact.

Eggplant

Paul: This has ...

Best of 2019 from Sew Preeti Quilts

It is January 1, 2020.  As I look back on 2019, I notice that there was a lot of pain and grief as reflected in the quilts from the Sacred Threads Exhibition.

For the Stillborn Bereavement Group
I made quilts for those who did not make it (Stillborn Bereavement Group) and for those who are trying their very best to survive (Soccoro Foundation Quilts) in hopes for a better life.

Soccoro Foundation Quilts

But in so many ways 2019 was a year of Badass Women. Whether it was the legendary spacewalk by the duo of Christina Koch and Jessica Meir ...

A Quilt for Eva from Sew Preeti Quilts

I met Eva for the first time about two years ago.  She is married to Bill who started out as a co-worker but ended up being a friend.  Since his retirement, they live in New Jersey.

On the Design Wall

Eva and I connected over our love of spicy food and gold jewelry.  When I showed her the first of the International Sister Quilt Blocks, her response was immediate. She loved them.

Setting Triangles

This was the first year I participated in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and the International Sister Quilt Block was a perfect block for the purpose.

Piecing ...

To the Dark Side from Sew Preeti Quilts

Paul: Are your sisters going to the dark side?
Me: No, they are shining lights in the night. Think Florence Nightingale.

Paul: But their clothes are dark
Me: Yes, it hides their stains

Paul: Stains?
Me: Blood, sweat and tears.
Paul: Whose blood, sweat and tears?
Me: Whomever needs comforting. I just said "think Florence Nightingale". You are not listening.

Paul (changing the topic): How many of these do you have?
Me: Plenty to make two quilts.
Paul: And who gets those quilts?
Me: Well, one will go to the quilt show next year and the other will be a ...
